In order to deliver the Foundation Stage we
offer a broad and balanced curriculum, based on active learning and on
interaction between adults and children.
Our children have a regular daily routine with a plan-do-review session
every day. Balance will be provided by
adult interaction with children, and by carefully planned small group
times. We choose to use this particular
approach:
v
so that children become used to making
informed decisions
v
to encourage children to meet, and solve
their own problems
v
to make play more purposeful, using
self-motivation to encourage the children to review their work to extend
children’s self-confidence, and oral skills
v
to encourage turn-taking and listening
skills
v
to meet the individual needs of the
children, focusing on the stage of development, rather than the chronological
age of the child
v
to encourage the children to become
autonomous, self-disciplined and self-reliant.
The curriculum is based on a two year
rolling programme of themes taken from the ‘Success for All’ language programme. It fosters children’s language and their
cognitive, social, emotional and physical development. The children are introduced to a concept or
skill, sing songs or chant rhymes related to the concept, and engage in meaningful
activities related to the concept. The
children are not expected to master concepts the first time they are exposed to
them as they revisit the concept or skill through various themes. They build their knowledge and expertise
through repeated exposure to the concept or through practice using the
skill.
The overall goal of ‘Success for All’ is
to ensure that every child leaves our nursery with the language skills, early
literacy, mathematical concepts, social skills, self-help skills and
self-confidence necessary for success in their reception class.
